Severnoye Design Bureau: Advanced Aircraft Carrier Needs New Nuclear Reactor

Rubric: Russia, Industry, Future

The future aircraft carrier needs development of a new-generation nuclear reactor. According to Vitaly Ignatiev, deputy head designer of Severnoye Design Bureau speaking at the panel discussion "Russia’s Technology Advance for Implementation of Military Shipbuilding Program by 2050" held on Thursday, August 23, at the Army-2018 forum, such need is connected to insufficient performance of available Russian reactors of this kind.

As for the representative of Severnoye Design Bureau, while developing of the nuclear powerplant for the new-generation aircraft carrier, it is reasonable to use technical solutions and components unification with the 4-gen nuclear-powered submarines.

To the Russian Navy, the issue of designing and building of the new-generation aircraft carrier still remains unsettled. The recently published Russian shipbuilding development strategy till 2035 prepared by the Ministry of Industry and Trade considers different scenarios of the country’s economic situation. In case of favorable financial environment, designing of the new carrier will begin after 2020, and in case of negative developments, the decisions as of construction of new oceangoing ships will be postponed beyond 2035.

The Army-2018 International Military & Technical Forum is held in August 21-26 at the Patriot Congress & Expo Center, Alabino Range, and Kubinka Airbase near Moscow. As for the Russian Defense Ministry, the event is attended by 1,500+ companies that present over 20,000 products.
