Russia and India are modernizing the BrahMos cruise missiles and conducting work on hypersonic technologies, said Alexander Leonov, Director General and General Designer of NPO Mashinostroyeniya (Research and Production Association of Machine-Building), speaking at the Korolev Academic Space Readings – a conference in memory of Sergei Korolev.
"We are constantly modernizing these missiles, improving their performance. So this work is ongoing. Within the BrahMos framework, work is also being carried out on small‑sized missiles, as well as in the hypersonic direction," the Interfax news agency quoted him as saying.
The first test launch of the BrahMos missile took place in 2001. Various versions of the missile, which reaches a speed of Mach 2.8 (3,430 km/h), are in service with all three branches of the Indian Armed Forces: the Air Force, the Navy, and the Army. The basic ship‑based modification of the missile can engage targets at a range of up to 290 km.
In 2021, the Indian Air Force began testing an air‑launched version of the supersonic BrahMos cruise missile with an extended range.
