The SVDM is a modern version of the proven SVD rifle and features improved operational characteristics.
"The rifle is designed to engage enemy personnel and unarmored targets at ranges up to 800 meters," the Kalashnikov press service explained. "The product is in extremely high demand among foreign partners."
The SVDM retains gas-operated automatics with a short-stroke gas piston and a gas regulator. Unlike the baseline SVD, the stock has been replaced with a folding frame-style structure with an adjustable buttplate and a removable cheek piece to improve convenience when firing with optical devices. The ergonomic pistol grip is made separately from the stock.
"Firing from the SVDM is possible with any type of 7.62×54R cartridges, but the best accuracy results are achieved when using sniper ammunition. A Picatinny rail on the receiver cover is used for mounting optical and night sights," Kalashnikov added.
The SVDM is used in all branches of the armed forces as a means of reinforcing infantry units. The rifle is in service with reconnaissance and special forces units for combat and special missions, and is used in situations requiring precision shooting at medium and long distances.
