Mil.Press TV: How Virtual Prototyping Helps Russian Designers Create Ships

Rubric: Russia, Industry, Future, Video

Zelenodolsk Design Bureau was among the pioneers in the Russian shipbuilding industry who implemented the software/hardware virtual prototyping solution, and the first design bureau who did it on the basis of IC.IDO - virtual reality platform by ESI Group. The package was delivered and installed by PLM Ural. Ivan Kulagin, the company’s software implementation engineer briefed Mil.Press on the IC.IDO-based VR system. Designers demonstrated the system’s operation on a model of the Project 03620 Chaika passenger liner. These ships are being built by Zelenodolsk Shipyard.

The system uses a model from any design system; in this case it is AVEVA Marine. A work team may collectively analyze the model, consider and review one or another solution. This streamlines implementation of designing tasks, helps in addressing ergonomics issues, simplifies acceptance process of onboard premises, and allows preparation of interactive operation manuals.

Ivan Kulagin says: Integration of the IC.IDO-based virtual prototyping system improves quality of both design model and documentation, which finally makes the ships higher-end as well.
